It's my life really

Textile has been my passion since... ever. Being taught some basic skills by my mother and grandmother, my next step was taking proper sewing lessons by an amazing teacher. She taught me precision, detail, perfection, as well as how to make button holes and invisible hems. Embroidery came later in the form of cross stitching and a miserable attempt to make a sampler. Patterns are not for me. I tried my hand at more free forms of embroidery on things I made from vintage textiles. It was a lot of fun and an important lesson for me. I sold what I made: baby quilts, toys, clothes, pillow cases and all kinds of lovely stuff. As I developed my skills and got a more independant style, the rigid grid of warp and weft of the vintage cottons became restricting and uncomfortable. I needed to move on. And then I discovered feltmaking. What a joy! I love the process of the careful and then the more vigorous work. The result amazes me every time. I use all kinds of found materials in my felt: (eco dyed) pieces of silk, left overs from the wool recycling industry, prints, old lace, flower seeds etcetera. Embroidery is part of my felting process, as it can be applied in every stage: before, during and after. The structure of felt is total freedom for me. And because of the small scale of my work, I can embroider anywhere: in my studio, my garden, a park or cafe, in the train, a museum, at home or abroad. I work form inspiration, rarely with a plan or sense of time. I like to see what happens along the creative path. I get inspired by conversations, stories, films, my handmade sketchbooks, nature, poetry, science, quotes, art, people: life. Forms, concepts and colours I choose by instinct. Textile art is a soft and tactile, but at the same time a strong and persistent form of art. Textile artists weave a world wide web and I'm proud to be a part of it!
